The European Sword Dance Documentation Project is an ongoing survey of hilt-and-point sword traditions in Europe. The project started as a Watson Fellowship that I received in 2011 to spend a year studying the subject. I have recorded dozens of hours of footage of sword dance groups in 10 countries along with thousands of photos, interviews and notation. I am currently working to write up some of the history and current state of these teams to be displayed alongside the photos and videos. I am also working to develop a notation system specific to hilt and point sword dance which will allow myself and other researchers to compare dances in a quantatative way as well as qualitative.
In 2012 I presented my initial findings at the ICTM Symposium on Ethnochoreology, where I was invited to show the following video.
